Maria and I took the train to Granville where we were picked up at the station by Aurore and her mother. We spent the afternoon helping Aurore and her two friends set up for their huge birthday bash. It was a tropical beach party theme and they had rented a room. In addition to giving a hand here and there, Maria and I blew up about 90 balloons, then helped make some fruit salad.
Then we went back to her house to ready ourselves for the party. The party started at 8:00pm and people trickled in...most of them arriving sometime between 8:20pm and 8:45pm.
The funniest part about the party was how as each person arrived, they would go around and give "bises" (a kiss on each cheek) to everyone else there. And they didn't even bother to ask your name! Maria and I were kissed by about 25 people (2 bises from each person!) in just that evening!
The party went well. Maria and I sat by ourselves for the first 15 mins or so, but eventually we started talking to the other people. We spent a lot of time with some students from Aurore's university in Rennes. They were really friendly and we enjoyed getting to know them.
Around 10:00pm the dancing started. It was rather loud, but everyone was really getting into it. They had strobe/disco lights (which made my head hurt a bit). We danced some of the dances and just watched some of the time.
At midnight they brought out the cakes and we all sang "Joyeux Anniversaire." Everything was somewhat tropical-ish: chocolate coconut cake, pinapple cake, coconut cookies, etc.
At 1:00am, Maria and I were getting pretty tired, so Aurore's father came and picked us up so we could return to Aurore's house to sleep. The party lasted until about 5:00am and poor Aurore (and her friends) had to clean up afterwards!
