On Monday afternoon I was picked up at the train station by my host father, M. Michel Arnaud. He gave me a short driving tour of Angers (I got to see the chateau!!) before bringing me back to their house. I have a lovely bedroom with a huge bed and desk. It is very comfortable.
I spent the afternoon unpacking (which didn't take too long as I didn't bring very much stuff) and resting. When Mme. Arnaud (Annick) returned from the gym, we had dinner. Michel cooks and he made a delicious dinner of soup, salad, cheese, bread, and crepes. And, of course, everything is eaten in courses! We had crepes because Feb. 2nd is traditionally a day when everyone eats crepes. :)
I have been able to understand mostly everything that they say (they speak pretty slowly) and I have actually been talking a little bit. In the evening I watched a little bit of the news on TV--they talk really fast, so I didn't understand very much.
On Tuesday I slept in really late (my host parents leave for work at 7:00am, so the house is empty after then) and ate breakfast. I get 3 dinners (Sun-Tues) per week and breakfast every morning, which is left out on the table.
We had our first orientation meeting on Tuesday afternoon where we met all the other AHA students (there are about 15) and then had a walking tour of Angers. I'm looking forward to exploring the town more in the next few days. We ate dinner at the University cafeteria (better than US cafeterias, but not spectacular).
This morning (Wednesday) we all took our French placement test. Hundreds of kids in a huge auditorium...120 questions...irritating oral comprehension part...but, it's over! We will find out our placement on Monday.
It has been cold, but sunny and I am living only 10 minutes away from campus (walking).
So far, life is good!
