Day 6 in London

Jan. 30th
We visited the Tower of London. It was amazing. They have free tours given by the Yeomen Warders, who are retired members of the military. They are required to have served at least 22 years in the military. They live in the Tower with their families (about 45 families live in there!) and their job is to give tours and, if needed, guard the Tower. Our guide was very funny and told us many interesting facts and stories. We saw the Traitor's Gate where they brought in people to be imprisoned (Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were among the prisoners). We saw the place of execution, the torture chambers (they have a rack!), the Crown Jewels, and the White Tower. It was incredible walking around thinking about how many people have walked the same cobblestones and touched those same stones. We stayed in the Tower for 4 hours, then walked over to the Tower Bridge where we paid to go up to the upper walkway. The view up there is amazing, especially at dusk when all the lights of the city are turning on.
We met Caryn and Jan for dinner at the OXO building. The restaurant is on the 8th floor and we had a table right by the window--another great view! Dinner was delicious and we split a piece of treacle tart for dessert...it's good!
That evening we all helped Jan alphabetize his enormous CD collection. It's amazing--so many great CDs...we had to get copies of a few! ;)
